i look up from my campfire
and my eyes widen
as a single meteor
burns its heavenly trail
across a starry midnight sky
my incandescent soul
approaches critical mass
as my senses sharpen,
lips, tingling
mind, thoughtless, spinning
heart, rhythmic
hopefully, i stand watching
glued to the blackness
but unfocused,
absorbing the entire field
with each purposeful blink
ready to hone on another streak
i miss not a single moment
but the second flash
does not emerge
dearth
i am not disappointed
this is not unexpected
i recede to the flicker-fire
still dutifully warming me
a peek through the telescope reveals
countless space-faring rocks
each coursed for the sky
above my head
i will keep one eye skyward
and one grounded
when the shower arrives
i will be am present
i will bathe am bathing in its brilliance
